Royal bride: Victoria of Sweden and Daniel Westling

Sweden hosted the biggest European royal wedding since that of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, when Crown Princess Victoria married commoner Daniel Westling.

The marriage, a love match that has weathered the disapproval of the bride’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, who was initially horrified that his heir was marrying her former fitness trainer, took place in Stockholm’s Storkyrkan Cathedral late on Saturday afternoon.

The beaming bride wore a gown of duchess silk satin by Swedish designer Par Engsheden. As the princess walked past family and friends, a lace veil worn by her mother on her wedding day clung to the cameo tiara, which was originally a gift from Napoleon to his wife Josephine.

The diadem– which features a depiction of Cupid and his soul mate Psyche– had also rested on the head of Queen Silvia on the day she said “I do” to King Carl Gustaf XVI. [more to come]
