FashionBride’s Interviews: Erez Ovadia
Advertisements Erez Ovadia is one of those amazing designers that stuns with the simplicity and intricacy of his designs. The line of the evening and wedding gowns is based on sophisticated Italian and French fabrics and integrates motives of simplicity, elegance and minimalism to the very last details, with surprising forms and unique hand made jewelry. We wanted to know more so we quiezed Erez about his beginnings and his art. Here are the questions but before don’t forget to check Erez Ovadia’s website ->click here –1. When did you decided to become a designer and why did you find this domain interesting?
It’s a difficult question because it wasn’t a dream for me to be a fashion designer.
I enrolled to the faculty of business & management in the university of Jerusalem and before starting i visited my uncle in the USA that had some stores for menswear , womenswear and accessories . It was amazing, I enjoyed every minute and I decided that I need to try and study fashion design.
I enrolled to one of the best schools in the world Istituto Marangoni in Milan . I said to myself that I will try 1 year and at the end I stayed for 8 years, studying at Istituto Marangoni and working at the fashion house Enrico Coveri . In one of my vacation in Israel, I was invited to my relative that had a boutique for brides & evening and I fell in love. I decided to leave Milan and to come back to Israel. I began to design my first brides collection at home and a seamstress did for me all the samples. Before I finished the collection one bride hear about me and ordered my first wedding dress. I was happy, for me it was a big satisfaction and an honor that a bride chooses me for her special day that remain forever in her heart. Afterwards my father forced me to take a boutique and to begin working .
I always say that I just wanted to try!2. Talk us through the first years of you work. Maybe you could tell us what did change in time. Are your designs different from the very beginning?
In the past a designer did a nice collection and sold it ,just like that! Nowadays it’s not like that and it’s not enough . Today you need to be aware about the prices, materials, costs, staff management, timing and marketing that changes very fast .the fashion world becoming global, fast, available, up to date , on line . no business in the fashion industry is just design but must be with a business vision and knowledge ,otherwise it will not survive .I would define it as 50:50 design:business .One of my dreams was to have a designer identity an imprint that is very clear to me and to my clients . In the last 10 years of my business, clients always said to me that its quiet easy to identify my style and the common line in all the collections .All my dresses in their essence are classic, updated. Every year I try to bring something else, search for new patterns and different elements ,fabrics ,trying to surprise myself and the crowd that follows me .you can see the evolution of my design line over the years .each dress is a creation , sometimes easy sometimes agonizing. I must fall in love with it and if not it will not be in the collection.3. Why should a bride-to-be choose one of your designs?
First of all it shows that she has good taste and seriously the bride that choose one of my dresses doesn’t want the conventional wedding dress.it is classic but sophisticated. My dresses are made with smart pattern and shape ,I don’t like to see bride that is suffering from the weight of the dress or that is to tight on her body .i don’t care about the size of her body, as a designer I need to give solutions for everything that bother the bride , I do care about her movement ,maximum comfort ,harmony without harming the beauty !
Aesthetics and harmony for me are the keywords, this is the difference between what “works” and what doesn’t. The fabrics and the laces that I use are in the highest quality, I am an expert to “hunt” the right fabric and to give them the proper use and solutions.4. Do tell us a bit more about your inspiration sources.
I am all the time in a research about fabrics, art, what it happening in the world of design. Sometimes inspiration comes from the fabric, from a vintage dress that I found in a vintage market in London, from visiting places around the world, sometimes I just draw something I dreamt about. Inspiration is not a permanent thing; I have learnt not to say no, that’s what makes the job so interesting.5. Have you got any piece you’ve created and that has a very special meaning for you? Can you describe it or can show us a picture?
I think the most meaningful dress of my life is the dress that I design for my wife for our wedding. It was an amazing short lacy dress, and not conventional.6. From your point of view, how should a perfect bride look like?
The bride needs to respect her character and her body. Feel comfortable in the dress ,often I ask her to be flexible , I want to take her to something that she didn’t think about cause having wedding dress usually happens one time a life .the dress is a significant part of the bride’s total look ,it has to be in harmony with her accessories ,shoes ,hair and makeup . I want that once the bride enter to her event the effect will be wow, not just for the dress but for the whole total look.7. And tell us what would you give her and, maybe, other brands can’t.
First, I am in the studio all the time , I give them “the designer” and not a saleswoman/man. I am involved in every detail of the dress. I match the body and the character of the bride to the right dress. I control the production and usually I am involved in all the fittings .my dresses give a classic , sophisticated minimalist but fashionable look .I try to give a twist to the classic and traditional look of a wedding dress.8. Last but not least, do you have any advice for FashionBride readers?
Despite the fact that all that period of wedding organization is stressful, exciting and important , you must have fun! Surround yourself with people that can support you, relax you, and give you a lot of good energy. Remember to breath (we need to do so), to smile and to be nice to those around you ,don’t forget that after the wedding you need to talk to those people. So congratulation
