Celebrity Wedding: Princess Beatrice & Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi
Some royal brides commission a dress that will immediately enter the history books.
Princess Beatrice simply went into the history books and borrowed one.
When Beatrice married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on July 17, 2020, the wedding looked nothing like the grand royal event originally planned. The ceremony, postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, took place privately at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge in Windsor, with only around 20 guests.
And somehow, the smaller wedding produced one of the most interesting royal bridal looks of recent years.
The Norman Hartnell Dress
Instead of commissioning a new gown, Beatrice wore a vintage Norman Hartnell dress borrowed from her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.
The ivory gown was made from peau de soie taffeta, trimmed with ivory duchesse satin and covered in diamanté, with a geometric checked bodice. Queen Elizabeth had famously worn it to the Lawrence of Arabia premiere in 1962.
But Beatrice did not simply take a museum piece out of storage and put it on.
The dress was carefully remodeled by Angela Kelly and Stewart Parvin. The silhouette was softened, the underskirts recreated, and short triple-organza sleeves were added and embroidered with vintage diamantés chosen to blend with Hartnell’s original work. Crucially, the changes were reversible, preserving the historic gown underneath.
That matters.
Because the result does not look like Beatrice is playing dress-up in her grandmother’s wardrobe.
It looks like her wedding dress.
The Tiara With an Even Better History
Then came the second extraordinary loan.
Beatrice wore the Queen Mary Diamond Fringe Tiara, created by Garrard in 1919 from a diamond necklace originally given to Queen Mary by Queen Victoria.
More importantly for a wedding: it was the same tiara Queen Elizabeth II wore when she married Prince Philip in 1947.
Princess Anne later wore it at her own wedding in 1973, making Beatrice part of a remarkable bridal lineage rather than simply a royal bride wearing an impressive piece of jewellery.
Why the Look Worked
Vintage royal dressing can go wrong very quickly.
Too much reverence and the bride disappears beneath the history.
Too much alteration and the reason for wearing the original piece disappears.
Beatrice landed somewhere much more interesting.
The puffed organza sleeves made the gown feel slightly whimsical and unmistakably hers, while the diamanté bodice and full skirt retained the strange, glamorous grandeur of mid-century royal couture.
Even the scale of the wedding helped.
A newly commissioned cathedral-sized gown might have looked absurd at such a tiny pandemic ceremony. Instead, an heirloom dress, a family tiara and a small chapel made the entire thing feel unexpectedly intimate.
The Wedding That Became More Personal by Necessity
Beatrice’s original May 2020 wedding plans had included the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace and a reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth in the Buckingham Palace gardens. Those plans were abandoned as the pandemic developed.
What replaced them was dramatically smaller.
And fashion-wise, arguably far more memorable.
There was no brand-new couture announcement.
No enormous royal procession.
No attempt to compete with the scale of the royal weddings immediately before it.
Instead, Beatrice wore her grandmother’s dress and her grandmother’s wedding tiara.
For once, something borrowed wasn’t a token detail.
It was the entire bridal look.
And that is precisely why we still remember it.
Celebrity Wedding: Justin & Hailey Bieber
Some celebrity weddings become memorable because of the venue.
Some because of the guest list.
Hailey Bieber’s became a fashion reference because of the dress.
Justin and Hailey Bieber had already legally married in a small New York civil ceremony in September 2018, but on September 30, 2019, they gathered family and friends for a larger religious celebration at the Inn at Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina.
And for Hailey, one traditional wedding dress designer was never really going to be the answer.
The Virgil Abloh for Off-White Wedding Dress
From the beginning, Hailey wanted Virgil Abloh.
She later explained that she deliberately did not want to work with a conventional bridal designer because street style was such an important part of her own fashion identity. Abloh and the Off-White team therefore took a recognizably traditional bridal silhouette and filtered it through their own language.
The result was an off-the-shoulder lace gown with long sleeves extending over the hands, a fitted silhouette, dramatic train and plunging back. Traditional floral embroidery was mixed with subtle Off-White motifs, including the brand’s arrow symbol.
It is romantic.
It is sexy.
And crucially, it never looks as though Hailey has suddenly dressed as somebody else’s idea of a bride.
And Then There Was the Veil
The veil is probably the detail most people remember.
Long, dramatic and spread across the lawn behind her, its hem carried the words:
“TILL DEATH DO US PART.”
Placed in quotation marks in typical Off-White fashion, the phrase turned one of the most traditional bridal accessories imaginable into something unmistakably connected to Abloh’s visual language.
It could very easily have become gimmicky.
Instead, it became the defining image of the wedding.
Justin Bieber in Celine
Justin kept things considerably simpler.
For the ceremony, he wore a black Celine suit designed by Hedi Slimane with a white shirt and black bow tie.
And that restraint mattered.
With Hailey’s lace, train and monumental veil already creating the visual story, there was absolutely no need for the groom to arrive attempting his own fashion event beside her.
One Wedding Dress Was Clearly Not Enough
Hailey’s ceremony gown was only part of the wardrobe.
For the rehearsal dinner, she wore a short white Vivienne Westwood dress, styled with bow-accented Jimmy Choo heels and a white ribbon in her hair.
Later, she changed into a custom Vera Wang silk-charmeuse reception dress with an asymmetric cowl neckline and crossed straps at the back — deliberately lighter and more sensual than the ceremony gown so that she could actually move and dance. She also wore another bridal look by Ralph & Russo during the celebrations.
In other words, the modern celebrity wedding wardrobe was already very much alive.
Why This Dress Still Works
The interesting thing about Hailey Bieber’s wedding dress is that almost every ingredient is traditional.
White lace.
Long sleeves.
A train.
A huge veil.
None of those ideas were new.
What made the look modern was who interpreted them.
Choosing Virgil Abloh meant that she did not have to abandon conventional bridal romance in order to look contemporary. Instead, Off-White inserted just enough of its own codes into the gown to stop it becoming generic.
And that may be why the look has aged better than many heavily trend-driven celebrity wedding dresses.
Hailey still looks unmistakably like a bride.
She just looks like Hailey’s version of one.
Celebrity Wedding: Priyanka Chopra & Nick Jonas
Some celebrity weddings give us one memorable dress.
Priyanka Chopra gave us an entire bridal wardrobe.
When Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas married at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India, in December 2018, the celebrations brought together both of their backgrounds through Christian and Hindu ceremonies, preceded by traditional events including the mehendi and sangeet.
And naturally, each ceremony came with its own extraordinary fashion moment.
The Ralph Lauren Wedding Dress
For the Christian ceremony on December 1, Priyanka wore a custom Ralph Lauren gown.
The dress layered a sheer, hand-embroidered long-sleeved coat over a strapless column covered with more than two million mother-of-pearl sequins. Floral embroidery, pearl paillettes and Swarovski crystals created texture without sacrificing the clean elongated silhouette.
Then there was the veil.
Seventy-five feet of tulle.
It required six attendants to carry it behind her and transformed an already elaborate gown into one of the most recognizable celebrity bridal looks of the decade.
But some of the most beautiful details were almost invisible.
Personal words and names were incorporated into the gown, including Nick’s full name, Priyanka’s parents’ names and words including family, hope, compassion and love. A piece of Nick Jonas’s mother’s wedding dress was also sewn into the gown.
Nick wore a custom Ralph Lauren Purple Label double-breasted tuxedo, with a fragment of Priyanka’s dress sewn inside his lapel and embroidered with “My Jaan” — “My Life.”
The Sabyasachi Lehenga
One day later, everything changed.
For the Hindu ceremony, Priyanka wore traditional red — specifically a custom Sabyasachi lehenga in an intense sindoor red.
The look was richly embroidered with silk French knots, crystals and hand-cut organza flowers. According to Vogue, 110 embroiderers spent 3,720 hours creating it.
Instead of attempting to Westernize the traditional silhouette, Priyanka embraced its scale: layers of jewellery, bridal bangles, an embroidered veil and an enormous skirt created a look that felt ceremonial in the fullest sense of the word.
Nick complemented her in a traditional cream-and-gold sherwani with a turban and embroidered accessories.
Two Weddings, Not One Compromise
What makes the Chopra–Jonas wedding particularly interesting from a bridal-fashion perspective is that neither ceremony feels like the secondary one.
They didn’t try to create one vaguely multicultural wedding dress that somehow represented everything.
Instead, they allowed each tradition to exist fully.
The Ralph Lauren look is unmistakably Western bridal couture: white, fitted, romantic and dramatic.
The Sabyasachi look is equally unmistakably Indian: saturated red, intricate craftsmanship, jewellery and ceremonial richness.
And Priyanka looks completely herself in both.
That may be the strongest bridal lesson here.
When two families, religions or cultures come together, the answer does not necessarily have to be dilution.
Sometimes you can simply have more wedding.
We certainly aren’t going to complain.

Princess Style Diary: Mary of Denmark
Just before I started writing this article I heard Princess Mary of Denmark has received an award for her fashion sense. Need I say it doesn’t surprise me? I love that she manages to look young and fresh even do she is a mother of four and has such a busy agenda. She has been since early 2000 a modern fashion icon that proves that you don’t have to shock or wear only designer brand to look picture perfect.

Celebrity Wedding: Eva Longoria and José Bastón
Actress Eva Longoria is now a married woman. The L’Oreal Paris ambassador tied the knot with José Bastón at a wedding ceremony held in Valle de Bravo, Mexico, on May 21st. Royal Bride: Prince Pieter-Christaan and Anita van Eijk

Kaitlin Doubleday married Devin Lucien in an intimate ceremony at the Ventana Inn in Big Sur, California, on a rainy Friday night.Empire co-creator Lee Daniels and Doubleday’s co-stars Gabourey Sidibe and Rafael de la Fuente were present for the nuptials.

Celebrity Wedding: Allison Williams and Ricky Van Veen
Girls star Allison Williams and College Humor co-founder Ricky Van Veen walked down the aisle on 19 September after dating for four years. The bride wore couture Oscar de la Renta for the big day.
